Monday 16 June
I began the
morning with a very useful meeting with someone from the
Consumer Council to talk about
consumer debt and advice available for those struggling with
debt.
In the
afternoon I met with the National Political Officer of
UCATT, the union for construction
workers, to talk about the Select Committee’s recent report on
Health and Safety.
At the
regular meeting of the Select Committee, we heard about the work of
the Pensions Regulator and the
Pension Protection Fund.
Tuesday 17 June
I attended
the launch of a report on Death and Injuries at work published by
the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies. The report highlighted the
shocking number of people who suffer fatal injuries at
work. See here for more
information.
Wednesday 18 June
The Select
Committee heard from the Minister for Disabled People as part of
our enquiry into Carers.
At lunchtime
I attended very interesting round table
discussion organised by the All Party Group on Poverty and the
Joseph Rowntree Foundation where
we talked about about reporting poverty and poverty
policy.
Then on to a
meeting with a number of voluntary organisations with an interest
in Children and Young people to talk about the Children and Young Persons
Bill.
I popped in
to the Health and Safety
Executive's annual parliamentary reception
where I was able to chat to them about the Select Committee’s
recent report on the HSE/HSC and the government’s
response.
Finally, to
the All Party Group on Mental Health meeting which discussed
Mind’s report “In the Red; Debt and
Mental Health”.
Thursday 19 June
In the
morning I was a keynote speaker at the National Welfare to Work Reform Conference:
Mapping the Route Towards Full Employment, run by the House
Magazine. I spoke in
the section on “Unlocking Britain’s
Talent” and referred to the need to ensure proper skills'
training for the unemployed.
In the
afternoon, I opened the debate in Westminster Hall (which is like a
mini version of the House of Commons Chamber) and talked about the
Select Committee’s report on Child Poverty and the government’s
response to our report. See
here for the text of my contribution to the
debate.
