January 2009 Westminster Diary

Monday 12th January
- Attended the launch of the Women’s Budget Group

- Attended a meeting to discuss the future of the Social Fund
Vote on the Business Rate Supplements Bill

Tuesday 13th January
- Meeting with Rita Donaghy,  Chair of the Inquiry into Construction Safety
- Led a delegation to James Purnell arranged by UNITE seeking justice for Turner & Newell  employees suffering from Asbestosis
- Attended the launch of the Labour Friends of Palestine
Vote on the Saving Gateway Accounts Bill

Wednesday 14th January
- Chaired the meeting of the Work and Pensions Select Committee with the Secretary of
State and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development to talk about the DWP’s response to the economic downturn and the implications for welfare reform
- One-to-one meeting with the Secretary of State
- Attended meeting with workers in the Aviation Sector organised by UNITE to discuss their ‘Backing Heathrow, Backing Britain’ campaign
- Attended debate in Westminster Hall on Tax Credits, Childcare Tax Credits and working parents, led by Karen Buck MP
- Met representatives of the Equality and Human Rights Commission 
to discuss the Equality Bill

Monday 19th January
- Meeting with One Parent Families/Gingerbread 

- Meeting with Arthritis Care 
- Chaired the meeting of the Work and Pensions Select Committee on the Equality Bill with representations from the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, Discrimination Law Association and Disability Charities Consortium; Age Concern England, Carers UK and National AIDS Trust
- Attended event organised by Progress, “All stick and no carrots: has Labour got it right on Welfare Reform?”
- Meeting with representative of UCATT
- Attended new year reception organised by Which?

Visit to Brussels with the Work and Pensions Select Committee to meet a wide range of people in the European Parliament/European Commission to gather evidence for our Equalities Enquiry

Monday 26th January
- Meeting with EDS
- Chaired the meeting of the Work and Pensions Select Committee on the DWP’s Inquiry into  the underlying causes of construction fatalities
Vote on the Coroners and Justice Bill

Tuesday 27th January
- Attended the Health and Safety Executive’s workshop on their Strategy Consultation

- Took part in the debate on the second reading of the Welfare Reform Bill  (plus intervention)

Wednesday 28th January
- Chaired the meeting of the Work and Pensions Select Committee where we discussed our future programme
- Met James Purnell to discuss the £60 bonus to pensioners
- Attended a meeting on Bridlington Hospital
- Attended a reception on the issue of Financial education and students’ financial management
- Attended a reception on the bus industry organised by the Public Transport Consortium
Vote on an Opposition motion on the government’s proposals for Heathrow

Thursday 29th January
- Attended the launch of Leonard Cheshire’s Suitability project
