Week beginning 7 July 2008

Monday 7 July

At our regular meeting, the Work and Pensions Select Committee met the Chief Executive of the Personal Accounts Delivery Authority.

Tuesday 8 July

I began the day by attending a breakfast meeting organised by Beginnings, a coalition of people from the public, private and voluntary sector who have come together to campaign to help disabled people get into work.

In the evening I went to the annual TUC summer reception.

Wednesday 9 July

The Work and Pensions Select Committee discussed the DWP’s annual report with James Purnell, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

In the afternoon I attended the launch of a report by UCATT (the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians) called “Apprenticeships – a firm foundation” in which they called on the government to do more to increase the number of apprenticeships in the construction industry.

Then on to a reception hosted by the All Party Print Group where printers from across the country came to meet their local MP.

I also popped into a reception, hosted by the Association of Colleges, at which they launched a research report ‘Celebrating Colleges’ which celebrates the achievements of colleges who have contributed to the prosperity and wellbeing of the country.

Thursday 10 July

A group of year 6 pupils from St Clare’s School came down to visit the House of Commons and we had a great time going round the ‘Your Parliament’ interactive exhibition in Westminster Hall.

At lunchtime I went to a forum on food and health hosted by the All Party Group on Osteoporosis.

In the evening I travelled to Colchester in Essex where I addressed a meeting of the Colchester Fabian Society on “Welfare reform – the next steps”.
